MSCSA’s 3rd Annual Golf Tournament - 2015

After two failed starts in late 2012 and early 2013, who would have thought that MSCSA’s annual fund raising golf tournament would become so successful? And it really seemed like God Himself was trying to give us a hard time, as both the 2013 and 2014 tournaments had to be postponed a week due to rain – which caused players to drop out that could not reschedule. Then a really bad cold front hit on the day of the 2014 tournament, further reducing the number of players; but those that chose to come became something of a MSCSA “golf fraternity” as we bundled up so much we all looked like Panda Bears trying to play golf. More than one player said it was the coldest round of golf they had ever played in their lives.

Three years ago, the idea was born that MSCSA could develop a major fund raising event and in doing so could cover the majority of softball expenses for most teams the following year. The 2013 tournament yielded a “profit” of $1,891. The 2014 tournament $2,465 --- even with the cold weather. But this year surpassed everyone’s expectations. We collected over $35,000 in prizes and raffle ticket awards, had 109 players, the largest number ever, and cleared a profit of $3,686 --- double what we did just two years back.
All three tournaments have been held at Riverchase Golf Course in Coppell. We’ve looked at other courses, but the proximity to all players, the quality of the golf course, their experience in executing golf tournaments, the outstanding bar-be-que dinner they prepare afterwards, plus the “perks” they offer, are just hard to beat. And this year God graced us with outstanding weather on October the 28th as it was just a perfect day to play golf.

Each year, MSCSA has gained more experience in putting on such an event; and this one was our best ever. As said earlier, we sought out and received over $35,000 in donations for awards and raffle ticket items. The average raffle ticket item was close to $200. The awards varied from $650 for our 1st Place team to $446 for our 5th Place team; and yes we had a terrific prize for not only our top 5 teams, but even our lowest scoring team got a neat prize.

Upon arrival at Riverchase, everyone was greeted and checked in by Irma Thomas, our President’s wife, and C. J. Christian, the wife of Jerry Christian from our A Division DeSoto Dukes. They picked up their Welcome Bags, revisited the Tournament Rules posted on the walls, then headed to the Ticket Sales desk manned by our Treasurer, Jim Delmar, and our Vice President, Richie Windle. $5 bills for everything got you up to 2 Mulligan tickets, up to 2 additional Musty Putter putting contest tickets, a Buy-Ahead ticket for 2 Par 5’s, and as many Raffle tickets as you desired.

This tournament had three new “wrinkles”. 1) The player with the longest hair won a nice gift from Great Clips, a large supply of shampoo and conditioner – just a fun gift. 2) The player judged to have the best “outfit” won a nice prize. 3) A teaching Pro from GolfTec was positioned at the #3, Par 3 hole, and hit a shot with each team as they arrived. If his shot was inside theirs, they got to putt from his ball. Plus, the ONE person that won “Closest to the Pin” on this hole for the tournament, if their shot was inside the Pros’, they not only won all the prizes associated with this hole, but they carried home an additional $125 in cash.

Allan Shelton of our White          Greg DeReyna of our C                       Carson Denaro, a Certified

Wayne Olsen, not pictured, took home the Par #3 “Closest to the Pin Award”, plus $125 in cash as his ball was inside Carson’s ball.

The Musty Putter putting contest was, once again, a big hit with most of our players. Four holes were set up on the putting green and the player with the lowest putting score through these four holes won “their choice” of a specially designed, just for them, $350 David Musty Putter. The trick was – you had to use one of the Musty putter demo’s available. Joe and Chris Conteras, the Texas Distributors for Musty Putter, set up and executed the putting contest.

Early on, one person scored a total of 7 putts through the four holes, Godfry White from our A Division DeSoto Dukes. As the tension mounted, two more contestants were tied with Godfry through the first three holes. On the last hole, a two-putt would tie them with Godfry, and a one-putt would put them into the lead. Alas, both three-putted the last hole giving them a total score of 8. Godfry had the good luck to purchase one additional putting contest ticket for $5; for on his first try, he scored a 12; but on his second try he scored the winning 7. Not a bad deal, win a $350 customized Musty Putter for just $5.

Several other awards, intermixed with a TON of Raffle Prizes were presented.  The Winners:

Darrell May – Longest Drive              Freddie Simpson               Hank Bollman – Closest to
Ages 55 to 69                               Longest Drive                         the Pin – Hole #13
                                                                 Ages 70 and Above

A stripe was placed down the center of one hole, starting over 100 yards away from the tee box, and to “qualify” for the prize, you had to use a driver. Allan Shelton placed his ball about 1 inch off the line. Goes to show you what the “Longest Hair” can also provide you.

Our tournament always has two neat prizes for the “Opposite End” of our winning teams, and both compare in value with everything else given away. Our “Lowest Scoring Team” walks away with a nice set of prizes and our “Worst Golfer” gets a nice set of gifts as well. The lowest score is obvious; but to win the worst golfer award you must hit more balls than anyone else, a) Out of bounds, b) Into trees, c) Into water, and/or d) Into sand traps.

Our last place team consisted of Richard             Cliff Pollack won our “Worst Player”
